"You ready?" The question was answered by a quick nod, and the duo leaped from the plane. In an instant, nothing but 10,000 feet of open air were between them and the massive expanse of a dark earth. A lush, triple canopy jungle which at first seems stationary, now rapidly began to grew large and surreal.
Two parachutes were pulled within one second of each other, and they glided silently into a clearing in the jungle. After a tuck and roll and a rudimentary thermal scan of the surrounding area, communication was re-initiated. "Well... it's just you and me, Iks."

Derrik smiled.
"Wouldn't have it any other way."
Derrik moved to a nearby tree for cover out of simple instinct. He checked his gun to make sure everything was locked and loaded. He then looked over at Jack and let out a huge sigh.
"So, whenever I get into these situations I feel as though all the time between this intense situation and the last one completely disappears from my mind and I live in constant intensity. You ever get that feeling?"
Derrik checked the direction from the sun then began to move west, towards their target.

"'Used to" Jack answered. He was staring into the dense darkness of the jungle. He tried to hear over the local wildlife calling through the night air for anything besides wildlife.
He heard nothing and whispered to Derrik, "Three miles through that is the camp where the pilot is being held. No intel on the security. Since you're so ready, let's get cracking."
He smiled and started into the lush foliage. Rescue missions were more invigorating to Jack than anything.

Derrik smiled. He began to quietly jog behind Jack and slightly to the left. His eyes, constantly scanning back and forth, began to sting a little with the sweat that started to move into them. He blinked them away and quickly wiped his brow with his right arm. As soon as he did that and dropped his focus for one split second he heard something stir about twenty yards ahead and to the left. He quickly jumped to the nearest tree and he 'double-clicked' his radio to get Jack's attention. He whispered...
"Noise, twenty, twenty-five yards, 10 o'clock."

Jack responded, "I heard. I'll move left, you, right." The two swiftly and silently flanked the bogey and took ambush positions. Then they heard the sound again. It was a crunching, grinding sound. Jack frowned and thought, "I know that sound." He slowly peaked around a tree to get a fix on the producer of this row. He leaned up against the tree and threw a rock at the Chimpanzee. "Stupid ape! You sound just like a cow grazing! Bum."
As the chimp ran off in Iks' direction, Jack smiled and said on the radio, "Hold still, buddy. Bogey's headed your way."

Derrik swiftly moved to a tree on quite a wide side of the right vector to get the bogey. He heard him coming. Derrik's heart began to accelerate. He began to sweat. He loved to take out multiple people at the same time, but one bogey... alone... in the jungle... he got nervous for some odd reason. The bogey was practically upon his tree... and then the bogey was on his tree... he could hear it climbing behind him. He turned and trained his gun on the tree and slowly looked up. He saw a little bit of movement... He didn't move, he just waited. Suddenly the chimp swung around the side of the tree and Derrik dropped to one knee, then shot the branch upon which the chimp was hanging. The chimp dropped to the ground about 15 feet below him. The chimp made a grumpy noise and tried to throw a rock at Derrik. He deftly dodged it and slowly walked up to the chimp.
He raidioed... "Nice."

He chuckled. "Watch for indigenousness life here, Iks."
The two quickly and silently dashed into the thicket. As the nimbly crossed through the foliage, Jack said, "We're meeting our contact three clicks ahead. But be careful, Iks--monkeys could be anywhere."

Derrik rolled his eyes as he was running.
"Done. You are done. No more Monkeying around."
Derrik chuckled to himself. Sometimes the funniest jokes happen simply inside your head. And sometimes they are so enjoyable that you have to let them out, whether others get them or not.
As Derrik landed after jumping over a log he peered around the tree and was stunned. He couldn't fully believe his eyes. There was a chimp, with explosives strapped to it. It was running as if he had just been equipped with the devices. It looked terrified. He radioed.
"Jack. I don't believe this. Are you seeing what I am seeing? My 4'o'clock, your '2'."

Jack thought of cracking another monkey for a moment, but he read the tone of his voice. He saw the chimp. "DO NOT MOVE!" he fiercely whispered. "He's spooked, but it may attack if you startle it."
While Derrik was keeping his head down, Jack looked in the direction the chimp came from. He saw something strange, but the darkness prevented him from identifying it. He spoke to Derrik, "Iks, I see something, but not sure what it is. The chimp's gone. We'll flank and close in. Use extreme caution. Something's screwy here."
They both quickly crawled through the brush. Jack assassinated several scorpions and spiders of unholy size along the way. He stopped. "In position. Still can't get a fix on what this is... but I smell something... nasty. Talk to me."

Derrik slowly passed the tree he had been leaning up against. He moved slowly and at a low level behind some brush and foliage. He came upon a bit of a dense tree-line before it opened up into something of a field. As he approached the tree line he began to see through and perceive what was happening on the other side. He moved up against a tree and slid down it, simply trying to breathe as deeply as possible to keep from blowing chunks or worse... losing his cool and unloading on the inhabitants of the clearing.
"Jack. I cannot explain this. You simply need to see it. Quick." He radioed in and simply waited.

It was never good to hear something like that.
Jack crawled on his belly to the clearing and discovered the source of the smell. There was a man hanging from a tree upside down--his hands dangling near the tall grass. There were at least 70 steaks and sticks protruding the body in every direction. from Jack crawled near the corpse. "Iks, this guy isn't making the smell... and he's not the contact. Stay real frosty, I'm gonna look around.
Jack crawled a little farther from their drop zone to find the source of this permeating smell. He passed to the side of the hanging corpse and heard the din of flies. "Oh boy" Jack thought. He moved forward again and placed his hand into something wet. "Oh boy" Jack thought. He took a whiff of the wetness and grimaced. He took out his night vision goggles and illuminated a mess of flesh and grinded bone.
Jack had seen more obscene sights than this, but he was caught off guard. He nearly threw up. "Iks, we're dealing with something dark here. I've got at least three bodies thrown into a meat grinder... literally. We gotta find our contact and get outta here asap. I don't like this."

Derrik suddenly felt a surge of fear. Now, humans, Derrik could handle. He could shoot them, break them, scare them, or stab them; however, when it came to any sort of evil without any type of physical presence, or when it came to religions, Derrik was in deep water, and he definitely felt as though he was unable to swim.
His breathing quickened. He began to check every direction quickly. Suddenly every bug became a demon and every bit of wind pushing aside an overhead branch became a vengeful spirit come to pay its unfounded payment upon Derrik.
He moved up, caught sight and stronger smell of the once-humans. He vomited. The combination of religious panic and real stench was too much. Thankfully he was fast enough to move any mask and equipment from the blast radius near his mouth.
"Pardon me." he muttered while wiping his mouth.
"Not exactly comfortable here, Jack. Let's move." With that he began sprinting towards the direction of the contact, through the woods. He moved with stronger agility for he seemed to feel the spirits at his back chasing him, spurring him onward with their vicious anger and mad rage.
"Jack, how far till contact?"

Jack returned to the mound of mangle humanity after his apprehensive scan of the surrounding area. Derrik was nowhere to be seen. He reached up to his ear to touch his comm, and it wasn't there. In a small burst of fear, panic, and anger, he spat, "WHAT THE?!"
He frantically checked the ground in both thermal and IR to no avail. "How could it just fall off?" He felt his wire. It had been fried off. Jack frowned and pressed his jaw and lips together tight. "What is going on here..."
He quietly called to the nearby bushes, "Iks! Iks, you frickin' answer me!" For the first time since he was a child, Jack felt an alone, paranoid fear. There was something behind every tree. Every thump was a footstep bringing an unknown terror closer. Every shadow was cast by a sinister vengeance looming just out of site.
Jack punched himself in the face. "Knock it off, idiot! Find Iks. Just find Iks."
He looked around for tracks, and found some. He followed them for a quarter of a mile until another set of tracks joined them from out of the wilderness. "Oh, no." Jack thought. His steady jog burst into a sprint. The tracks just kept going. He thought he heard something to his left. He stopped instantly and held perfectly still. His heart was creating a drum symphony. He saw and heard nothing. He sprinted after the tracks again. Then he heard something right behind him! He dove forward, spinning around and used his silenced SIG 552 to unleash an 8 round barrage at whatever was chasing him. He landed in a muddy slide. Nothing was there. Nothing thermal, nothing IR. He ignored it and continued his pursuit. "This is all screwed up!"

Derrik had been distracted by 'something'. He had been running along for a little ways when he realized that Jack wasn't with him. He kept talking into his comm, but he never heard an answer. Finally he waited for a few seconds and listened... He didn't know what to do, so he simply kept heading towards the contact. "That's what Jack would do and it's what he'd want me to do," he kept telling himself. The contact wouldn't be too far ahead... another two or three miles perhaps.
Yet, he stopped. Jack was back there. How the heck did he think he'd just keep going and leave him back there?! He started to run back again. He heard a couple rounds go off and then he began sprinting at full speed towards the sound. "Screw stealth" he muttered to himself and he yelled at the top of his lungs...
"JACK! JACK!" then he stopped for a moment, dropped to one knee, readied his rifle and waited... silently...

Jack froze when he heard his name faintly called in the distance. It sure sounded like Iks. He decided not to answer with premonitions of a trap in his head. Instead, he made for the call with silent speed.
He figured he was at least half way to where the call originated when he heard a blood curdling scream--the kind of scream that sounds recklessly damaging to a voice. Jack lowered next to a tree. The wild scream drew nearer. Jack hadn't made a sound, yet the wailing entity seemed to be coming straight for him.
He took aim in the direction of the sound, switched to thermal, and stayed still. Then, out of the abyssal blackness of the jungle came a wild eyed, shirtless native. He had some sort of stick or spear, and he was rushing blindly at Jack. "This night could not get any weirder." Jack lined up, and set loose a three round burst in the crazed man's head when he broke the ten foot barrier.
He quickly examined the corpse and only discovered dilated pupils. "Crackhead." Jack closed the man's eyes and continued toward where Iks might be.
