So this is a question, which came from a thought, which is a thoughtful question. Sort of.
Ok, so you people being Americans here, what are your views on patriotism? Specifically American Patriotism.
I was in America once, and to be honest it nauseated me. I'm proudly South African and a patriot, and I endorse patriotism.... but it was obnoxiously forced on me by the Americans. Even now I lose my appetite thinking about it.
Any thoughts?

lol, nice way to start it all up. I am a fan of realistic, logical patriotism. I am not a fan of blind, foolish idealisticness that simply is not happening. Yes, our founding forefathers were pretty cool and they had good ideas and views, but to be honest... it's not the way it used to be. We're pretty much a bratty civilization now that pouts and fights and tries to be good, but usually ends up drowning in our own lusts and fantasies (all the while dropping more into dept, lol). But, when it comes to being a patriot and respecting your country, I dig it. But, to be honest, I feel the same way about South Africa... and a lot of other countries to be honest... perhaps I'm not the best one to discuss this topic though... cuz I've done a fair bit of traveling and I'm not sure where my home ACTUALLY is. ... I did like Mexico though... at least the resort I was at. ;D

Patriotism. Wow. So many different means now-a-days. I personally, agree with the Tea Party/ Right Wing/ Republicans. I support the military, good times and bad. I pay attention to the way our beloved President is slowly choking my future. I believe in One nation, under God. --- I think I might make that into a speech or something...

In my opinion, the word 'Patriotism' is entirely lost on most of America's citizens. Nyke touched on this, but we're lost in ourselves. Entertainment/self is our god, and when the days come to celebrate our independence, it is simply another reason to party; just make sure to wear the appropriate colors.
This isn't to say it's lost on everyone, but I would say the average American teen doesn't know that Independence Day and the 4th of July are the same day. I know most Americans certainly couldn't tell you that the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776.
I haven't exactly answered your question, but I'll finish by saying I think patriotism is becoming a meaningless word to the American populous. I hope when we're forced to remember that we're not being occupied by China or something.
However, I'm interested to know what you mean by "obnoxiously forced." When I think of American holidays, the word "obnoxious" is one I would use to describe, but could you explain? That is to say if you took the three hours to read this response.
Quick answer: Patriotism is crucial, and it should be a constant realization. I believe it can be defined as "sincere love and support."

Well... if Hat went to any of the East Coast Baptist Churches on the 4th of July Sunday... it could be seen as "forced" because it's so connected to even worship... That, to be honest, doesn't really bother me as much as it used to... but I think that they need to have the right focus. Not, "Praise this Country" but, "Praise our God who has mercifully allowed this country to do as well as it has... though we are so sinful..." ya know?
That's what I think...

Although, I have noticed that we as Americans all claim to be Patriotic when I see so many people disrespect the American Flag and the National Anthem. So, I think we force it so much in order to saturate our apathy, so that we don't notice.

Yes, some, and even myself at points, find ourselves apathetic to freedom and human rights. But what is irksome to me are those who spit in the face of American ideals. By that, I mean the animosity toward government, the disapproval of militant action, and the criticism and misuse of American rights. Granted, the government has ventured far beyond its purpose, but focusing our hatred on all things American accomplishes anarchy.
But I stray from the topic. I fear for America's future due to it's general view of God. It was founded by Godly men, and God blessed us greatly. But the great nation is no longer led by Godly men. And if history has taught us anything, it is that the nations that tower become top-heavy. So I hope that we have an uprising of true patriotic leaders.

Hehe.... the occupy movements... they are somewhat funny. I'm glad they did away with the Debit Card Usage Fees though... that would've made my job so much more annoying. I'm glad that Wells Fargo was just piloting that though... and not actually using it all over like Bank of America... suckers. People like something to shoot at... and it seems like it's always been popular to shoot at the leaders of anything. Leaders, by the fact of their purpose, have to go ahead of the group and cause change, movement, and progression (or digression). Whenever someone is detached in any way from the group, he becomes a target. It seems like America is like a group of young siblings... we hate each other, but if some outsider comes up to us and hits our little sister... we will friggin' beat the smack out of him... then go back to fighting afterwards. It's immaturity and simplicity of mind.

My dad put it this way: I can kick my brother, but if you kick him, we both kick you.
